What Does Full VA Entitlement Mean, and How Do You Check Yours?

September 22, 2026

Short answer: Full entitlement means you have all of your VA home loan benefit available. Your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) shows a basic entitlement of $36,000, and with full entitlement VA sets no loan limit on your purchase. Your lender still checks your income, credit, and debts, and the appraisal still has to support the price.

"Entitlement" is one of those words that gets thrown around before anyone explains it. You do not need to know it already. This post covers what it is, what full entitlement changes, and how to see yours.

What is VA loan entitlement?

Entitlement is the amount VA agrees to pay your lender if you stop repaying your loan. VA calls it a guaranty. It is not cash you receive, and it does not come out of your pocket. Your COE shows how much of it you have.

It comes in two parts:

  • Basic entitlement. This covers loans of $144,000 or less. If you have full entitlement, your COE shows a basic entitlement of $36,000.
  • Bonus entitlement. This applies to loans over $144,000. VA guarantees to your lender that it will pay up to 25% of the loan amount.

In dollars, 25% of a $450,000 loan is $112,500. That is an example of the math, not a promise about your loan, and your lender will tell you what applies to you.

What does full entitlement mean for your loan?

VA says that with full entitlement you have no loan limit, as long as you can afford the loan amount and the property appraisal supports the purchase price.

Read that carefully, because "no limit" is easy to misread. It does not mean you can borrow any amount. Your lender still looks at your income, credit, debts, and assets to decide what you qualify for. The appraisal has to come in at or above the price you agreed to. Full entitlement removes VA's cap. It does not remove the lender's math.

What if you do not have full entitlement?

If you have used part of your benefit, you have remaining entitlement instead. VA says your remaining bonus entitlement is based on the county loan limit where you plan to buy, minus the amount of entitlement you have already used.

The county loan limits match the conforming loan limits published by the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), using the one-unit limit for your county.

This is where a down payment can come in. VA says your lender may require one if you do not have enough remaining bonus entitlement for a 25% guaranty on the loan amount you want. If you are in that spot, our post on using your VA loan again walks through how remaining entitlement is calculated and how it can be restored.

How do you check your entitlement?

Your COE is the document that shows it. There are three ways to get one:

  1. Online through VA's own system.
  2. Through your lender. Many lenders can request it for you through VA's Web LGY system.
  3. By mail with VA Form 26-1880. VA notes that mail takes longer than the other two.

What you send depends on your status. Veterans use their discharge or separation papers, the DD214. Active-duty members need a statement of service signed by their commander. National Guard and Reserve members vary based on activation status.

Once you have your COE, look at the entitlement amounts on it, and ask your lender to confirm what they mean for your price range. If the COE shows something you do not expect, that is worth a conversation before you make an offer, not after.

Why this matters before house-hunting leave

Your entitlement affects your price range and how much you might need down. If you are coming to Nellis on PCS orders, check it before you arrive so your leave goes to touring homes and not to paperwork. Here is a plan for your 14 days of house-hunting leave. You will also want to know the cost that comes with the loan: see the VA funding fee, who is exempt, and what it costs.
