VA Certificate of Eligibility: How to Get Your COE for a Home Loan

October 09, 2026

Short answer: A VA certificate of eligibility (COE) is the document that shows a lender you qualify for the VA home loan benefit. You can get one three ways: through your lender, online at VA.gov, or by mailing VA Form 26-1880. The lender route is often the fastest, because many lenders can pull it in VA's system in seconds. What you need to send depends on whether you are active duty, a veteran, Guard or Reserve, or a surviving spouse.

Let's make this simple. The COE is step one. VA's own Buyer's Guide lists it first, before choosing a lender or an agent. Getting it early takes one question off the table before you start looking at homes.

What is a VA certificate of eligibility?

VA describes the COE as the document that "verifies to your lender that you qualify for the VA home loan benefit." It is the first step for a VA-backed home loan.

If you have used your VA loan before, the COE does a second job. VA's Buyer's Guide says a current COE can show how much remaining entitlement you have, or confirm that your entitlement was restored after a past VA loan was paid in full. That matters a lot to PCS families who still own a home from a prior duty station.

If entitlement is new to you, start here: what full VA entitlement means and how to check yours.

How do you get a VA certificate of eligibility?

Good news, you have options. VA lists three ways to request it.

1. Through your lender

VA's Buyer's Guide says most lenders have access to VA's WebLGY system, which "can establish eligibility and issue an online COE in a matter of seconds." The catch: it only works when VA already has enough of your service data on file. If it doesn't, you or your lender will need to send documents. Either way, ask your lender first. It costs you nothing to ask.

2. Online at VA.gov

You can request your COE yourself on VA.gov by signing in to your account and filling out the online version of the request. VA's guide mentions signing in with ID.me or a DS Logon. You can also check the status of a request online.

3. By mail

Fill out VA Form 26-1880, Request for a Certificate of Eligibility, and mail it to your regional loan center. The address is on the last page of the form. VA warns that mail requests may take longer than online or lender requests, so this is the slowest path.

What documents do you need for a COE?

It depends on how you served. Here is what VA.gov lists for each group, checked October 9, 2026.

Active-duty service members

A statement of service signed by your commander, adjutant, or personnel officer. VA says it must show your full name, Social Security number, date of birth, the date you entered duty, the length of any lost time, and the name of the command providing the information. VA notes there is no single standard form for this, and it may be on letterhead or computer-generated.

Veterans

A copy of your DD214. VA's Buyer's Guide adds that if you separated after October 1, 1979, you should send the Member 4 copy, which shows your character of service and the reason for separation.

National Guard and Reserve

  • Activated Guard members: your DD214 or other discharge papers. If you are using at least 90 days of active duty, including 30 days in a row, VA also wants a document showing your activation date, such as a DD214 showing activation under certain sections of 32 USC, an annual point statement, or a DD220 with orders.
  • Activated Reserve members: your DD214 or other discharge papers.
  • Current Guard or Reserve members never activated: a signed statement of service with the same details as active duty, plus your total creditable years of service.
  • Discharged Guard members never activated: NGB Form 22 for each period of service, NGB Form 23, and proof of the character of service.
  • Discharged Reserve members never activated: your latest annual retirement points statement and proof of honorable service.

Service time rules for Guard and Reserve have their own details. I covered them here: VA loan requirements for National Guard and Reserve members.

Surviving spouses

The veteran's DD214 if you have it. If you receive Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC), VA Form 26-1817. If you don't, VA Form 21P-534EZ, a copy of your marriage license, and the veteran's death certificate.

What if you can't find your DD214?

VA's Buyer's Guide gives three options. You can send a completed SF 180 to request your military records, request your records through the National Archives website, or get a Certificate in Lieu of Lost or Destroyed Discharge. VA says any VA office can help you get proof of service.

Does a COE mean you're approved for a loan?

No. Here's what most people don't realize: the COE only confirms the benefit. VA's guide says you also have to meet VA and your lender's standards for credit and income, and you have to plan to live in the home. After the COE, your lender reviews your finances, and once you're under contract, orders the VA appraisal.

The COE and pre-approval work together. Here is how that part goes: VA loan pre-approval process.

Common COE mistakes

  • Waiting until you find a house. Request it before you start touring, especially on a short house-hunting trip.
  • Assuming your old COE is still accurate. If you have used the benefit before, a current COE shows what entitlement you have now.
  • Sending a statement of service that's missing details. VA lists exactly what must be on it. Check every item before you submit.
  • Guard and Reserve members sending the wrong discharge paperwork. VA says only an honorable character of service counts for Reserve and Guard eligibility, so make sure your documents show it.
  • Mailing the form when your lender could pull it. Mail is the slowest option.
